Greek zombies, more than
satisfying effects and a very
entertaining movie is what you
can expect from To Kako or
Evil.
Storywise, the plot couldn’t be
more classic: people running
from zombies and chopping up
some newborn undead along
their path. Place this in an
infinte loop for about 1,5 hour
and you get To Kako. But hey
isn’t this the synopsis for most
of the zombie releases ?
At the beginning of the film you
see 3 geologists working in
some caves on the outskirts
of Athens, where they
encounter some kind of entity
which infects them and turns
them into -ofcourse- undead
flesheaters. Moments later,
the infection spreads and
most of Athens population
runs around hunting for
human flesh.
As skinny as the plot appears
to be, Noussias surprised
me with his camerawork and
editing ideas. For example,
sometimes the screen is
divided into several squares
each highlighting a camera
angle of the same scene.
Adding that little extra
something to the dynamism of
a scene.
On top of that we get treated
to some decent special
effects. Those effects reach
their climax at allmost halfway
the film where the group
of refugees meet up with
some marines and suddenly
get attacked by hordes
of zombies. This part has
Braindead-like bloodletting
with epic proportions and tons
of comic relief.
Aside the good gore I
must say I am somewhat
dissapointed in the zombie
make-up, it seems the limited
budget all went into the chop
chop scenes. But hey, that
works for me!
The most inruiging parts of
the movie are the final few
moments where Yorgos
manages to create a grand
finale which will not go
unnoticed.
(Spoiler!) The few remaining
survivors finally go into the
soccer stadium and run to the
middle of the field, standing
back to back and armed with
all they can find. The camera
zooms out slowly, revealing a
top view of the stadium lying
in the city. Slowly but surely,
the streets surrounding the
building are being populated
by hundreds, even thousands
of zombies. While the camera
zooms even further you, see
the grey mass entering the
stadium and finally running
on the soccer field where the
agonizing gang awaits their
fate. The last few minutes
are so brilliantly rendered
onscreen that alone for this
part you should check
To Kako out!
Definately one of the better
homebrewn movies around.
